THOUSANDS PRAY AMERICA REVERSES 'DEPARTURE FROM GOD'
'Our country is in a deep spiral of moral and spiritual descent'
Thousands from the highways and byways of America, and around the globe, stopped what they were doing on Thursday to gather together and pray that America soon will reverse what organizers of the 9/11 Day of Prayer call a “rapid departure from God.”
Christians gathered on a telephone conference call several times during the day to pray, to listen to others’ prayers, and seek a repentance for the nation and a restoration to God’s will.
“Our country is in a deep spiral of moral and spiritual descent,” organizers explained online. “The Bible declares that such things lead to national judgment. The biblical warning signs of national judgment that appeared in the last days of ancient Israel are now reappearing on American soil.”
The prayer day, featuring multiple telephone conference calls for prayer, has been endorsed by actor, martial arts superstar and now WND commentator Chuck Norris, who noted in his nationally syndicated weekly column, “WND Editor Joseph Farah and thousands of others across the land are calling up America’s spiritual reserves, challenging our spiritual fervor and cranking up our spiritual warfare by … declaring a National Day of Prayer and Fasting – and on what better day than Sept. 11?”
Exact numbers were being totaled by officials with Intercessors for America, a ministry that routinely organizes special prayer events, and worked on Thursday’s program.
But it was reported computer servers were overwhelmed by the traffic.
Organizers requested that people pray according to the example set in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people who are called by name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”
All believers were invited in the organic movement that called for the Lord’s leadership.
Joining in endorsing was Greg Laurie, the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, a church of some 15,000, as well as David Barton, a Christian minister and conservative activist.
“National leaders such as Michele Bachmann, Greg Laurie, Jonathan Cahn and Joseph Farah have stated that what America needs most right now are the sincere and humble prayers of believers following the prescription of 2 Chronicles 7:14,” he said.
“I agree. … It’s not too late for God to heal our nation. …We can’t do it ourselves without His mighty hand.”
Cahn, another endorser, is the author of the highly successful “The Harbinger” book, and the newly released follow up on the issue of God’s judgment, called “The Mystery of the Shemitah.”
He’s president of Hope of the World ministries and senior pastor at the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, New Jersey.
Bachmann, a longtime congresswoman from Minnesota, said, “I join together with other Americans who have called for September 11 to be set aside as a day for personal prayer, reflection and fasting, for ourselves and for our nation. At this time of national mourning, as we search for comfort in the aftermath of this loss of innocent life, we would be wise to consider afresh 2 Chronicles 7:14: ‘If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’ As we humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways, we can take assurance from the Holy Scripture that God has promised to hear from heaven, will forgive our sin, and will heal our land.”
Organizers say they see as the purpose of the day to confess national sins, “the killing of millions of the unborn … sexual immorality, carnality, materialism … increasingly driving God out of our national life … rejecting His ways … an increasingly godless culture … pride and self-reliance without God.”
The hope is that America returns to God, they explain, for “revival for the church as a whole, and individual.”
The plan?
“Whatever it takes for that to happen.”
Elizabeth Farah, executive vice president for marketing and special projects for WND, and a co-founder, joined in, quoting from Deuteronomy 10, “What doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
“The church of America has greatly lost the fear of the Lord. We don’t teach it. We don’t believe it. We don’t walk in your ways, and we don’t serve you in the way you require,” she prayed. “Please forgive us and our nation. Bring us to repentance. Give us revival.”
It was the second annual event. One year earlier, an estimated quarter-of-a-million people were involved in the inaugural 9/11 National Day of Prayer and Repentance.
It was born in a commentary by Joseph Farah, CEO and founder of WND, in April of that year. He explained that while millions flocked to churches and houses of prayer after the terror attacks, ultimately, America did not change its course.
“As Jonathan Cahn pointed out so effectively in ‘The Harbinger’ and ‘The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment,” he said, “America prayed after Sept. 11, 2001. But America did not repent.”
Farah said the model America followed “was the same paradigm followed by ancient Israel as described in Isaiah 9:10 – the pledge to rebuild bigger and better in our own strength without notice to what God was trying to communicate through a limited judgment.”
“As a result, American has seen continued judgment ever since,” he said. “Therefore, repentance is as important as prayer.”
Farah explained he called for the day out of a sense of frustration with politics and the decline in morality in the country. He suspects there is a connection between the revealing of national “sins” and the desire by believers to confess their own sins to God in unity with other believers.
In 2013, there were gatherings in churches, homes, parks and universities – even a 24-hour telethon by a Chinese prayer group.
